Everything You Need to Know About the Lunar Eclipse

Everything You Need to Know About the Lunar Eclipse

The Lunar Eclipse in Virgo is happening this Friday between 1:26-2:31 AM CST. Here’s everything you need to know about Lunar Eclipses and what it means for you.

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth's shadow to fall on the Moon. This can only happen during a full moon when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are perfectly aligned.

There are three types of lunar eclipses:

- Total Lunar Eclipse – The entire Moon passes through Earth's umbra (the darkest part of its shadow).

- Partial Lunar Eclipse – Only a part of the Moon passes through Earth's umbra, making a portion of the Moon dark.

- Penumbral Lunar Eclipse – The Moon passes through the Earth's outer shadow (penumbra), causing a subtle dimming that can be hard to notice.

Lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on Earth where the Moon is above the horizon at the time of the eclipse, unlike solar eclipses, which are only visible in specific locations.

This week’s eclipse is a TOTAL Lunar Eclipse.

Why is This Week’s Eclipse a Blood Moon?

A "Blood Moon" occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. Instead of going completely dark, the Moon turns a reddish hue because of Rayleigh scattering—the same phenomenon that makes sunsets appear red.

Why the Red Color?

- Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter-wavelength light (blue and violet) while allowing longer-wavelength red and orange light to pass through.

- This filtered sunlight bends around the Earth and casts a reddish glow on the Moon.

Not all lunar eclipses are "Blood Moons"—only total lunar eclipses create this effect.

How do Eclipse Seasons Work?

Eclipse seasons are the periods when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are properly aligned for solar and lunar eclipses to occur. These seasons happen about every six months due to the tilt of the Moon’s orbit relative to Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

The Moon's orbit is tilted ~5 degrees compared to Earth's orbit around the Sun (the ecliptic plane). This means that most full moons and new moons do not result in eclipses because the Moon is slightly above or below Earth's shadow.

About every 173 days (roughly 6 months), the Moon’s orbit aligns closely with the ecliptic plane, creating an eclipse season. During an eclipse season, at least one solar and one lunar eclipse will occur, and sometimes there can be up to three eclipses in a single season.

If a new moon occurs during an eclipse season, a solar eclipse happens. If a full moon occurs during an eclipse season, a lunar eclipse happens.

Since the Moon moves through its phases in ~29.5 days, it is possible to have two solar eclipses and one lunar eclipse or two lunar eclipses and one solar eclipse in a single eclipse season.

Eclipse seasons are tied to the Saros cycle, a roughly 18-year pattern where eclipses repeat with similar characteristics and can be used to predict future eclipses.

Tell Me About The Virgo-Pisces Eclipse Season

The Virgo-Pisces eclipse season occurs when the lunar nodes (the points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic) are in the Virgo-Pisces axis. This means that solar and lunar eclipses will take place in the zodiac signs Virgo and Pisces.

Themes of the Virgo-Pisces Eclipse Season

- Virgo (Earth, Mutable, Ruled by Mercury) focuses on wellness, organization, health, routines, productivity, and practical solutions.

- Pisces (Water, Mutable, Ruled by Neptune & Jupiter) focuses on healing, intuition, dreams, emotions, surrender, and spiritual connection.

- Solar Eclipses in Virgo represent new beginnings in health, work, habits, and daily structure. They encourage practical solutions and grounded action.

- Lunar Eclipses in Virgo highlight overwork, perfectionism, or health imbalances, pushing for necessary changes in habits and routines.

- Solar Eclipses in Pisces represent spiritual awakenings, creative inspiration, and emotional release. They encourage letting go of rigid control and trusting intuition.

- Lunar Eclipses in Pisces reveal emotional patterns, subconscious fears, or escapist tendencies that need healing. They push for faith, surrender, and emotional balance.

Tell Me More About the Lunar Eclipse in Virgo

A lunar eclipse is like a supercharged full moon, bringing culminations, revelations, and emotional turning points on a much deeper level. Since full moons already signify completion and clarity, a lunar eclipse amplifies this energy and may even trigger significant shifts or awakenings. A Virgo lunar eclipse shines a light on themes of health, work, daily routines, organization, and practical solutions prompting you to reflect, reassess, and refine these areas of life.

Themes of a Virgo Lunar Eclipse

- Work & Productivity: Realizations about burnout, efficiency, or career direction.

- Health & Wellness: Awareness of stress, lifestyle changes, or healing routines.

- Perfectionism & Control: Learning to release rigid standards and embrace imperfection.

- Balance Between Logic & Intuition: Virgo seeks details and order, while its opposite, Pisces, calls for surrender and trust in the unknown.

What does the Virgo Lunar Eclipse Mean for Me?

A lunar eclipse in Virgo is a powerful moment to reflect on clarity, release, and transformation in areas related to health, work, routines, and personal growth. Lunar eclipses are for culminations and awakenings.

In Virgo, use this week’s eclipse to reassess your habits, release perfectionism, and find a balance between productivity (Virgo) and surrender (Pisces, its opposite sign).

Themes to Reflect On:

- Clarity & Truth – Lunar eclipses expose what’s been hidden, and in Virgo, this could mean seeing where you've been overly critical, stuck in perfectionism, or neglecting important details.

- Balancing Control vs. Surrender – Virgo craves structure and order but Pisces reminds us not everything can be planned. Reflect on when to take action and when to trust the flow.

- Decluttering & Purification – Virgo energy is about cleaning up—whether that’s your physical space, mental habits, work projects, or even relationships. What’s no longer aligned? What’s draining your energy? This is the time to let it go.

- Health & Well-Being – Since Virgo rules the body and daily routines, this eclipse may highlight self-care, diet, exercise, or mental health patterns that need attention. A wake-up call for better balance.

- Refining Goals & Purpose – If things have felt chaotic, this eclipse invites you to reassess your plans, set practical goals, and organize your life more efficiently.

- Connecting Spiritual & Practical Wisdom – With Virgo’s analytical mind and Pisces' intuitive heart, reflect on how you could merge logic with faith by using both practical strategies and inner wisdom to move forward.
